Is A Lash Serum Right For Me?
Is A Lash Serum Right For Me? Dr. Kjar & Candessa

Lash serums have become a staple in the beauty industry the last few years. Longer, fuller lashes are in, but what is the best way for you to achieve them? Lash serums are an awesome and natural option and is often more cost effective. But which lash serum is right for you? Here are a few tips to consider when choosing the best lash serum for you.
What is a lash serum?
Lash serums are meant to promote healthy and expedited lash growth. It gives your lashes the boost they need to grow longer, thicker and more beautiful than ever. Whether you already have long lashes, but would like more fullness, or you have very short and fine lashes. A lash serum will work for just about everyone! Our office carries both Latisse and Revitalash.
Which serum is right for me?
While our social media timelines are often full of lash growth serum before and after photos, there are a few ingredients to consider before investing into an over the counter lash serum. Many over the counter serums are pumped full of vitamins and amino acids, which will aid in healthy lash growth, but they do not actually contain the key ingredients that stimulate growth and thicker lashes. Both Latisse and Revitalash contain these prostaglandin analog ingredients that stimulate the lash growth and thickness.
Latisse contains an ingredient called bimatoprost, and is currently the only FDA approved lash serum on the market. Latisse is prescription only, so it must be purchased inside a physician’s office. The reason why Revitalash is still placed in the same category as Latisse is that it used to contain bimatoprost as well. After a legal battle between the two lash serums, Revitalash now contains latanoprost, which is still an ingredient that will stimulate new growth, but is considered to be not quite as strong as bimatoprost.
Dr. Kjar and our aesthetician’s will typically suggest that a patient start with Latisse, and once their bottle is finished, to maintain with Revitalash. Reason being, Latisse is definitely a bit faster to see results. But it is not for everyone. With the formula being a bit stronger than Revitalash, some people with sensitive skin or eyes will notice some dryness or irritation. In that case, you are perfectly fine to start with Revitalash and stick with it! Both lash serums yield fantastic results, but it honestly comes down to personal preference and tolerance to each formula. Give each lash serum 5-8 weeks to see results.
Are lash serums safe to use with lash extensions?
To answer this question, we reached out to one of our local lash artists, Jenny LeBlanc of LeBlanc Artistry. Jenny explained that using a lash serum in conjunction with lash extensions is a great idea! Reason being, the more lashes you have, the more lashes she has to add an extension to. Giving you fuller looking lashes. The lash serum will also promote the health of the lashes which can sometimes be slightly compromised by lash extensions. So the answer is, yes! You will only see positive results by combining the two.
Ready to try a lash serum for yourself? Great! You’re in luck! This month (March of 2019) save 15% on either Revitalash or Latisse! Already have gorgeous long lashes from one of these lash serums? Then give your lashes some curve appeal and get a FREE lash tint when you have a lash lift done this month! Enjoy!

All About Hands
All About Hands 150 150 Dr. Kjar & Candessa

With new tools, improvements in technique and consumer confidence in dermal fillers are fueling the popularity of hand rejuvenation treatments. Sun-mottled, wrinkled, veiny hands shout one’s true age despite how young the face might look. Surgical hand-lifts are not an option, but aesthetic practitioners can subtly hide telltale signs of hand aging with a range of products and procedures.
Two main factors have led to an increase in patients requesting hand rejuvenation. First, patients are now familiar with devices and fillers for the face and feel comfortable and confident with them. Secondly, a plethora of new types of treatments can quickly, safely and effectively restore volume, smoothness and softness in the hands. Chemical peels, intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser therapies can improve sun damage and uneven skin tone, while dermal fillers can help remedy soft tissue loss.
Many of the dermal fillers routinely used in the face are also effective for hands, but currently only two product have FDA approval specifically for hands. The first, Radiesse, a calcium hydroxyapatite dermal filler, was approved in June 2015 to treat volume loss in the hands. The second, Restalyne Lyft (our office carries), became the first hyaluronic acid filler to gain FDA approval for hand rejuvenation in May 2018.
Typical hand rejuvenation patients are those who have successfully received filler for facial concerns and want to similarly improve the appearance of volume loss in their hands. Hands start to lose volume due to fat atrophy around age 40, leading to thinning skin, fine lines, and bulging veins. As one of the most exposed-to-the-elements body parts, hands are more likely to have photo damage.
For pigmentation complaints, our office recommends topical tretinoin, chemical peels, or foto-facials. For volume loss and general skin aging, we would suggest dermal fillers. This month, we are rolling out a new package. The Youthful Hands Package includes your dermal filler treatment, two photo rejuvenation treatments for pigmentation on the hands, and includes a FREE medical grade skin tightening and toning hand cream to help ensure a beautiful result for months to come! Schedule a consultation with Dr. Kjar to see if you are a candidate!

Why are chemical peels good for my skin?
Why are chemical peels good for my skin? Dr. Kjar & Candessa

We all have heard of chemical peels at some point. Whether it was a good or bad experience, we know of someone who has had them. But why are chemical peels one of the number one requested skincare services in the country? Why would anyone WANT to peel? What are the benefits? Let’s dive right in to those questions!

What do peels do?
In minutes, acids lift away dead cells and trigger a chain reaction. As the topmost layer of skin is used, signals are sent to the living cells below to multiply and move up, to increase collagen production, to make more hyaluronic acid, to act younger. A thorough chemical peels offers one immediate benefit: smoother skin that’s more radiant and more receptive to ingredients in your at-home skincare. Your skincare will perform better because there are no dead skin cells impeding the penetration. On top of the anti-aging benefits, there are many great benefits for our acne patients. Some chemical peels are attracted to the oils in our skin that cause the bacteria that acne feeds off of. Removing these layers of dead skin, as well as decreasing oil production in the skin, leaves a beautiful result. Chemical peels will increase circulation in the skin, and bringing new oxygen and blood flow to the skin is very healing and rejuvenating!
Can a peel be customized for my skin concerns?
There are chemical peels that are safe to use on every skin color without risk of hyperpigmentation, usually a worry with darker complexions. We have a wide range of chemical peels. There are superficial peels (also known as a lunchtime peel), medium-depth and deep-depth. We now know that using multiple acids gives a better outcome with less irritation than a single acid at a higher strength. All of our aesthetician’s are proficient in skincare chemistry, and are able to create a blend of acids that will safely attack the concerns you have in your skin. There are chemical peels that focus on hydration, where you will not “peel”, and mid-deeper depth peels where you may peel for a week or more. We offer a wide variety of options, and our aesthetician’s can assist you in choosing a peel that will work within your lifestyle.
The right peel can end acne, and soften the scars that come with it.
Salicylic acid peels and Jessner peels, dive deep into the pores while also skimming the surface to erode blackheads and fade post-pimple marks. Another advantage of salicylic acid: It lingers in the pores, where it continues to keep them clear over time, to improve pitted acne scars. There is very little downtime, and it’s safe for most skin types and colors.
Chemical peels are melasma’s friend.
While there isn’t a permanent cure for the recurring sun-triggered dark patches brought on by hormonal surges. Whether those surges are caused by pregnancy or birth control. Chemical peels, paired with proper at-home care such as hydroquinone creams, high-SPF sunscreen and strict sun avoidance, offer the best fighting chance, While lasers work well with some cases, some patients are unable to treat this light and heat sensitive condition with, you guessed it, light and heat. We offer chemical peels that are exclusive to our office only that have been tried and true when it comes to combatting melasma.
Ready to take the leap?
Come in and see what peels are all about! October is a great month to begin a series of chemical peels. With less sun exposure in these fall and winter months, it is the ideal time. This month we are highlighting our Pumpkin Apple fall peel. This peel uses the natural benefits of apples and pumpkin to firm and tone the skin for a refined look, while nourishing and brightening dull, dry summer skin. Achieve a beautiful and youthful glow to your skin just in time for all of your holiday festivities!

Vollure- Am I A Good Candidate?
Vollure- Am I A Good Candidate? Dr. Kjar & Candessa

Write your story… Without parentheses.

Over time, your skin loses elasticity, which contributes to moderate to severe lines that form around the nose and the mouth. While serums and creams work on the skin’s surface, Juvederm’s Vollure will add volume to the skin to smooth these lines and folds, to help give you the subtle, long-lasting results you want!
What causes parentheses lines?
Parentheses lines are known as “static” wrinkles. Static wrinkles are lines that appear even when your face is at rest. This happens over time as your skin loses some of it’s building blocks (hyaluronic acid and collagen), that give your skin its structure.
Can your natural lips lose volume?
Yes, over time, your lips may lose volume and become thin. However, many people seek out lip augmentations with injectable fillers, because they naturally have thin lips and simply desire more fullness.
What is Juvederm Vollure? Where can it be used?
Juvederm Vollure is an injectable form of hyaluronic acid that is used to soften moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to add volume to thin lips. By adding volume to lines and wrinkles, it produces a beautifully subtle and long-lasting result for up to 18 months! The original Juvederm, while it is a fantastic, tried and true product, is proven to last only 1 year.
We are excited to add Juvederm Vollure to our already impressive line of injectables. We want you to experience it the way we have. That’s why we are offering $50 OFF each syringe of Juvederm Vollure purchased this month! Call in and schedule a consultation with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kjar to see if you are a good candidate for Vollure.

Neck and Decollete Care in 20's, 30's and 40's
Neck and Decollete Care in 20's, 30's and 40's Dr. Kjar & Candessa

One area that always gives away your age is your neck and your décolleté. We often forget to take care of these sensitive areas! We spend so much time focusing on our face, we need to give that same type of care and attention to these surrounding areas. You are never too young to begin caring for your skin. But in this post we will address what you can start to do in each decade to combat the first signs of aging, all the way up to deeper lines and wrinkles.
In our 20’s and 30’s we need to start setting a base foundation for how we will care for our skin for years to come. As we begin to age, our body naturally stops producing collagen. This process begins in our 20’s. So we must do what we can to prevent the breakdown of our existing collagen. So what can you do to protect your skin from premature aging?
Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen daily. A large majority of the collagen loss in your skin can be attributed to UV sun damage. So make sure you do not forget your neck and décolleté when applying your SPF in the morning. You want to use an SPF of at least 30, and reapply consistenly when out in the sun for extended periods of time.
Moisturizers and Serums: When applying moisturizers and serums, don’t forget your neck and chest! Any serum from a hyaluronic acid, such as our Sheer Peptide. To a vitamin C, such as our Anti-Ox Ultra, will do your skin some good. It is also a good idea to begin using a product such as our Neck Smoothing Cream. With over twenty different tighteners, and gentle retinol. You can help prevent some of the environmental aging before it even begins. So be sure to show your face, neck and décolleté some love, daily!
Facials: Consistent facials at any age will be an important tool in your beauty arsenal. Facials address the face, neck and décolleté. Ask your aesthetician to upgrade your facial to either a microdermabrasion that for an additional fee includes your neck and décolleté, or a mild chemical peel that can stimulate new collagen and elastin, and soften lines and wrinkles.
By your 40’s and 50’s you should definitely be consistently applying sunscreen and at-home products like mentioned above. But as our skin continues to age and change, it is time to start focusing some of your in-office treatments on your neck and décolleté. Everyone ages differently, but it is not uncommon to begin seeing some lines and wrinkles (necklace lines) appear across the neck. Depending on how you sleep, you may realize the lines on your chest that you used to fade away not long after waking up in the morning, are now noticeable at all times. Sun spots are beginning to pop up, and you feel like you’ll never have your gorgeous, young looking chest again! But never fear. There are a variety of in-office treatments that you can utilize to turn back the clock.
Chemical Peels: Chemical peels are a fantastic place to begin. Chemical peels are no longer as daunting as they once were in the past. With the variety of peels that exist now, depending on the desired intensity, there are many peels that are an easy option to add in to your regular facial. Have you ever had one of our Brightening or Illume peels? Did you know both can be used on your décolleté? Because why stop at your face! Especially if pigmentation, or harsh texture is becoming an issue for you. Those two peels are a fantastic place to begin reversing those signs of aging skin.
PhotoFacials: Lasers are your friend when it comes to anti-aging treatments with minimal downtime. Photofacials are fantastic at not only treating unsightly pigmentation issues, but helping to tighten and tone the skin. Downtime is different for everyone, but is typically less than 24 hours. Up to 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart may be necessary for best results. But it is a fairly quick and easy way to turn back the clock!
Venus Viva and Diamond Polar: One of the newest additions to our office, but the most effective. The Venus Viva and Diamond Polar Skin Tightening are two separate treatments, but they pack a 1-2 punch that is a great option whether you are just beginning to see the first signs of aging, or have some signs of advanced aging. The Venus Viva and Diamond Polar are both powered by radio frequency. The Venus Viva is comparable to microneedling, a buzzword in the aesthetics world at the moment. Radio frequency is used to create small pinhole channels deep down into the skin. These channels create a controlled injury in the skin, that results in the growth of new collagen and elastin. The radio frequency breaks down texture in the lines and wrinkles, smoothing the appearance of even the harshest of lines. Up to 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart are suggested for best results.
The Diamond Polar utilizes radio frequency as well. But in this treatment the radio frequency is used to bulk heat the skin. When the skin reaches a certain temperature for a specific amount of time, it tightens and tones the tissues that have begun to have issues with skin laxity. These two treatments work beautifully hand-in-hand to deliver the best results possible! Skin tightening treatments may be done weekly, and in a series of 3-8 treatments, depending on the severity of the issues.
Home care will always be necessary to see your best, long-term results. The combination of skincare and in-office treatments will leave your skin in the best possible condition, despite the environmental and genetic odds we all fight daily. If your neck or décolleté have become an area of concern for you, consultations with our aestheticians are always complimentary. Schedule a consultation today, and let’s get you on the road to happy and healthy skin!

Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Skin Cancer Awareness Month Dr. Kjar & Candessa

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Did you know? With 5.4 million cases and more than 3.3 million people diagnosed annually, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer and highly treatable when detected early. These are the most recent statistics from The Skin Cancer Foundation.

Jane Iredale has seven SPF products approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation. Here are some tips and tricks:
PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation, SPF 20 or SPF 15: For a soft natural matte bronzing powder with an SPF, choose a deeper shade of PurePressed Base. You will achieve a natural sun-kissed complexion, without the harmful effects of the sun.
Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder, SPF 20: By adding a mist of POMMIST Hydration Spray, you will provide a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radical production caused by sun exposure.
Glow Time Full Coverage Mineral BB Cream, SPF 25 or SPF 17: Achieve paparazzi ready complexion, for any indoor or outdoor event with our new Blending/Contouring Brush for a velvety finish. Extremely water-resistant, making this the perfect wedding foundation.
Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer, SPF 15: For complexion, so smooth it glows, mix Dream Tint and a dime size amount of Golden Shimmer, apply with Blending Brush for a sophisticated radiant effect.
* Are you beach ready? Not unless Powder-Me SPF is in your tote bag! Protect your skin from the harmful sun rays, and enjoy your swim knowing it is water resistant up to 40 minutes *
Powder-Me SPF Dry Sunscreen, SPF 30: Make the application of your sunscreen fun and more glamorous. Add some 24-Karat Gold Dust into the powder to achieve an all-over glistening effect or mix with Tantasia for an instant bronzing to your skin.
Your moisturizer or body lotion has no SPF? Create it by adding a little Powder-Me SPF into your moisturizer or body lotion. Your skin will appear smoother.
Forgot to apply sunscreen, and now you are sunburned? Apply Powder-Me SPF to help calm and soothe the skin.
HandDrink Hand Cream, SPF 15: It is the perfect companion for your handbag, especially when getting your manicure. Let the nail technician perform the hand massage with only the best.
Looking to show off those fabulous sandals or stilettos? Let HandDrink do more than just hands; it is also great for your feet. Next time you are due for a pedicure, have your nail technician massage the cream with a little 24-Karat Gold Dust. The result is an elegant visual effect to your legs and feet.
Lip Drink Lip Balm, SPF 15: Did you know? Lips have no oil-producing glands, which leaves them unprotected against the elements, causing dryness and aging effects.
In love with a particular shade of eyeshadow or blush, and wish, you could find it in a PureMoist Lipstick? Let LipDrink transform any eyeshadow or blush into a long-lasting SPF lip shade. Apply LipDrink in Sheer and lightly tap the color of your choice on top, seal it with a touch of lipgloss. Our personal favorite is Violet Eyes as a lip shade topped with Kir Royale PureGloss Lip Gloss, for a sparkling effect.
PureMoist Lipstick: Did you know? The average woman spends $15,000 on makeup in her lifetime- and of that amount, $1,780 goes toward lipstick. From lipsource.com, women will use up to 9 pounds of lipstick in their lifetime.
When choosing the perfect shade for spring, base it on your natural lip color, not your skin tone.

  • Pale lips look great in cherry, red or coral. Give Gwen a try!
  • For naturally reddish lips, try a hot pink or vivid orange, like Renee.
  • For dark lips, you can have a lot of fun with deep vampy shade like Cindy or Margi.

You can make your lipstick last longer if you blot with a tissue and reapply the lipstick again. A second coat will add shine and coverage.
Our aesthetician’s are always happy to do a complimentary color match for you to find a foundation, lipstick or gloss that you will want to wear all summer long! Stop in to try something new, or to pick up more of your summer makeup favorites!
